Here is a little about me and how it applies to UX/UI Design.
I am…
…a mother.
I was given the amazing opportunity and awesome responsibility of raising three beautiful, intelligent and creative children. Now that they are grown, they are professionally successful and kind. I’m proud of that. From raising my children, I learned that people are bright, insightful beings that have varying perspectives. Valuing another’s perspective teaches me about myself, about others, and about how the world works.
…a teacher.
I have taught preschool, elementary school, middle school, high school and adults. I have taught in private schools, public schools and homeschooled. I have used traditional curriculum, digital curriculum and curriculum I created myself. I have taught in person and remotely. From my experience teaching, I learned that teaching is a group effort. Working as a team can be difficult and frustrating, but this is where great thinking, great ideas and great solutions are found.
…a weaver, flutist and writer.
I have played the flute since the fourth grade, I have written for my own personal enjoyment my entire life, and last year I fulfilled a lifelong dream of learning how to weave on a floor loom. Through these creative endeavors I have learned that creating something, whether it is a piece of cloth, a piece of music, or a piece of poetry, is difficult. It takes patience, perseverance and time. The end result is something beautiful and deeply satisfying.
…a UX/UI Designer.
At the prompting of my daughter, I enrolled in Nashville Software School. During my tenure there I learned HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Git, GitHub, the Five Step Design Process, wireframing, prototyping and user testing. I also learned that people are resistant, not to change or learning something new, but to the feelings of vulnerability, fear, and discomfort that come with those things. If I can make someone feel comfortable, safe, encouraged and heard, they are able to learn, and perhaps more importantly, willing to try, new things.
